Using candles in rituals and spell work is an ancient practice that has been noted and documented in cultures all over the world. The origins are not known specifically but the evidence of beeswax candles being used can be traced back to 300 B.C.E. Egypt where they believed that staring into the flame of a candle could allow the individual to see gods, he would retire to a remote cave or dedicated room and then dream of conversations with divine beings. Pagans used candles in rituals as far back as the 4th century and following this was the use of candles and lanterns used in other religions around this time to exorcize demons, consecrate burials, and absolve individuals of sins. 

The many uses of candles in our history includes ancient peoples prescribing a candle to protect from the negative influence of witches, as well as actual witches using them in magic rituals all the way up until present day. 

“In folklore, candles have a strong association with the dead, perhaps dating back to old Jewish customs, later adopted by Christians, of lighting candles for the dying and dead. A lit candle placed by the bedside of a dying person is believed to frighten away demons. One Jewish custom calls for keeping a lit candle for a week in the room where a person died, perhaps to purify the air. In American folklore, however, a candle burning in an empty room will cause the death of a relative. The uses of candles vary from cleansing, or using as an offering on an altar, as well as using as a guide in any form of divination. The use of a candle in a magic ritual holds the intention and energy of fire, which is that of moving energy quickly, dissolving energies, or burning away / clearing out old energy. The practice and intentions is up to the user entirely but candles can be mixed with herbs, crystals and other tools that can enhance the other tools and the intention of a candle. Many rituals and spells in modern paganism and witchcraft include lighting a candle that has been dressed with oil, tied with cords and rolled in herbs that can be used to cut ties to people, reveal love, create love, remove obstacles, open doors to higher consciousness, and create boundaries or protections over specific things or people.
